Sustainability isn’t an afterthought at Yohann. It’s one of the basic building blocks of our business concept. We firmly believe that sustainability is an integral part of good design and it guides every decision we make.

A NEW TREE FOR EVERY YOHANN

We’re grateful for the opportunity to use beautiful wood sources for our products. But we don’t believe in only taking. For every Yohann product sold, a new tree will be planted. Each tree, once grown up, has the potential to accumulate over one hundred times the carbon dioxide released in the making of a single Yohann product. We’re using resources given to us by nature, and it’s our duty to preserve them for future generations.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Timber production in many countries is unsustainable, with big forest areas disappearing and illegal logging flourishing. We craft our products from walnut and oak, sourced from selected regional European plantations and forests with sustainable forestry. By avoiding endangered wood species and sourcing our materials carefully, we avoid contributing to deforestation and reduce our environmental impact as much as possible.

REDUCED TRANSPORTATION

Using locally-sourced materials and working with manufacturers located in Central Europe strongly reduces the environmental impact, compared to production in faraway countries. Long-distance transports are avoided, which means fewer emissions involved in the entire process of transforming the raw materials into the finished product.

CARBON NEUTRAL

For all non-avoidable transport, including shipping to our customers, we compensate the corresponding carbon dioxide emission either directly with our carriers or by supporting carbon dioxide compensation projects with myclimate.org. This means we reduce the carbon emission connected to our products and their global shipping to zero.

EUROPEAN ECOLOGICAL STANDARDS

European manufacturers are subject to strict ecological standards around all their production processes, including waste disposal. These standards are much more stringent than in most other manufacturing locations in the world and contribute to improving environmental conservation.

ETHICAL PRODUCTION

By crafting Yohann products in Italy and Germany, we support local family businesses and help traditional craftsmanship continues to flourish in Europe under correct labor conditions including fair wages and the associated employer outlay. Regular visits to our production partners help us to monitor the production and working conditions.

SOCIAL INTEGRATION

We collaborate with two sheltered workshops in Germany and Switzerland that provide people with disability the opportunity to be involved in employment using hands-on skills. This way, we can offer them a responsible job that provides them satisfaction and pride.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are common, universal goals for member states of the United Nations to transform the world into a fairer, more prosperous and peaceful society until 2030. Even as a small business, Yohann remains committed to contributing towards these goals. Our current activities already support the following SDGs:

SDG 8
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

SDG 12
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

SDG 13
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact

SDG 15
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
